Bayou Book is a free, unofficial fan project for Hunt: Showdown. This page explains which data it keeps, why, and who else gets to see it.

Contact

The quickest way to reach us is the feedback form at the bottom of every page. Your message and our answer then show up under Menu › Messages.

Signing in

You sign in through Steam. Steam only tells Bayou Book your Steam ID, never your password. After that, a session token keeps you signed in for up to 90 days. It sits in your browser as a cookie and in local storage, and signing out removes it.

Cookies and local storage

Bayou Book sets exactly one cookie and keeps a few entries in your browser's local storage. All of them are needed for signing in or remember settings you chose. None of them track you.

  • Cookie __session: keeps you signed in for up to 90 days and is removed when you sign out. It can only be read by Bayou Book's server and is only sent over HTTPS.
  • hunt-kd-session: the same sign-in, kept in local storage.
  • hunt-kd-v1: the sessions you count, kept locally so counting works even when the connection drops.
  • hunt-kd-board-v2: your leaderboard settings.
  • bayou-overlay-layout: whether your stream overlay link is horizontal or vertical.
  • Admins only: a few view settings of the admin area, and for the read-only view through another hunter's eyes, which hunter is being viewed (session storage, gone when the tab closes).

Bayou Book itself sets no other cookies. Because these entries are strictly necessary or store settings you made yourself, no consent banner is needed.

What gets stored

  • From your public Steam profile: Steam ID, name, avatar, profile link and, if your profile shows them, your country and your Hunt playtime.
  • What you enter: kills, deaths and assists per day, your synced in-game stats, your settings (who can see your profile, the country for your flag), your friends and friend requests, comments and likes on news, and feedback including screenshots and the conversation that follows in Messages.
  • With feedback: the address of the page you were on, the size of your browser window and your browser's user agent, so we can reproduce problems.
  • Activity: your first and last sign-in, the last time a page of Bayou Book was open (for the green online dot other hunters see on your profile), and which pages you open, counted per day together with the hour and the type of device (computer, phone or Steam overlay). This helps us see what gets used. It is not shared with anyone.

What does not get stored

  • The screenshots for the stats sync are read inside your browser. They are never uploaded.
  • Your Steam friends list is fetched to show who is playing Hunt right now. It is used for that moment and not saved.
  • No advertising, no third-party analytics, no tracking cookies.

Who can see your data

  • You choose in Settings who sees your numbers: every hunter, only your friends, or nobody. Your name and avatar stay visible in search, friend lists and comments.
  • The flag for your country shows next to your name on your profile and in leaderboards, for everyone who may see your profile. It comes from Steam, and in Settings you can pick another country or hide it.
  • Comments on news are visible to everyone who is signed in.
  • If you create a stream overlay link in Settings, anyone who has that link sees the kills, deaths and assists of your current day, no matter who may see your profile. Nothing else is shown. A new link or turning it off stops the old one right away.
  • Admins of Bayou Book can see all stored data. To help with problems, they can look at the site the way you see it. That view is read-only and changes nothing.

Services involved

  • Google Firebase hosts the site and stores the data (Hosting, Cloud Functions in the EU, Firestore).
  • Valve / Steam handles sign-in and provides profile data through the Steam Web API. Avatars and emoticons load straight from Steam's servers.
  • Google Fonts provides the fonts, loaded from Google's servers.
  • jsDelivr delivers the text recognition for the stats sync, only when you sync. cdnjs (Cloudflare) delivers the screenshot tool of the feedback form, only when you take a screenshot.

Whenever your browser loads something from one of these servers, that server sees your IP address. Some of these companies may process data outside the EU.

How long data is kept

Your data stays as long as your account exists. You can delete your account yourself in Settings: your profile, days, sync, settings, friendships, overlay link, likes, feedback and messages are then deleted right away. Your comments on news stay, without your name, as “Deleted hunter”. Page views that are only counted per day, without you, stay as well. If you want only parts of your data removed, tell us and we will delete it.

If an account is banned for breaking the terms, we keep its Steam ID, name at the time and the date of the ban for as long as the ban lasts, also after the account is deleted. This is the only way to keep a banned hunter from signing in again.

Legal basis

Data you need to use Bayou Book is processed to provide the service you signed up for (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Usage statistics and the data sent with feedback are processed based on our legitimate interest in running and improving the site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Your rights

You can ask what data about you is stored, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to its processing, and receive it in a portable format. You can also complain to a data protection authority.
